Most UK homes are connected to a single-phase electricity supply, which provides power at 230 volts across a single live wire. Three-phase supplies deliver power across three live wires at 400 volts and are typically found in commercial and industrial properties, or homes with high power demands such as large EV chargers, workshop machinery, or three-phase heat pumps. If you think you might need a three-phase supply, an electrician can assess your requirements and liaise with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to arrange an upgrade.
A home EV charger installation typically takes between two and four hours, depending on the location of your consumer unit, cable routing, and whether any groundwork is required for an outdoor installation. In most cases, a home EV charger installation falls within permitted development rights and does not require planning permission, provided the charger is installed on private land and certain size and placement conditions are met.
