Your Common Central Heating Questions Answered
Installing a complete central heating system in a property with no existing heating typically takes between five and ten working days, depending on the size of the property and the complexity of the installation. This includes all pipework, radiator fitting, boiler installation, controls, and full commissioning. Extending an existing system or adding heating to a new extension will generally take two to four days. Our engineers design the system using a full heat loss calculation to ensure every room is correctly heated, and all work is completed to Gas Safe and Part P standards.
Yes, central heating can be installed in almost any property, including older homes. The most straightforward approach is a traditional radiator-based system using a modern combi or system boiler. Pipework is routed through floorboards, under floors, and through walls to each radiator position, typically with minimal disruption if access is good. In properties with solid floors or very limited access, electric panel heaters or underfloor heating may be more practical alternatives. Our engineers survey each property individually and advise on the most cost-effective installation route.
In most cases, yes. Traditional electric storage heaters are significantly more expensive to run than a gas central heating system with a modern condensing boiler — often two to three times the cost per unit of heat. A gas central heating installation represents a significant upfront investment but typically pays back the difference in running costs within a few years. If a gas supply is not available, a heat pump or oil central heating system may be viable alternatives. Our engineers can carry out a full cost comparison for your specific property to help you make the most informed decision.
A new central heating installation should include at a minimum a room thermostat, a programmer or timer, and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on every radiator except the one in the room where the thermostat is located. These controls are required by Building Regulations for new heating systems. We recommend upgrading to a smart thermostat such as Nest, Hive, or Tado, which adds remote control via smartphone, learning capability, and integration with smart home systems. Smart controls can reduce heating bills by 15 to 25 percent compared to basic timer-only setups.
